Guidelines for Safely Installing Reeling Cables

The trouble-free and long service life of reeling cables requires the adherence to certain installation guidelines.
•  The cable must be wound directly from the supplied drum onto the reeling drum without requiring complete unwinding. It is essential to ensure a straight, torsion-free guide during this process. Similarly, the cable must be fixed and connected without torsion, adhering to the specified minimum bending radius.
•  When the cable is fully extended, at least two windings should remain on the reeling drum. For securing the other end, Kellem grips or large-surface clamp connections can be used. Reeling cables must be installed with care and protected from external damage during both installation and operation.
•  For cylinder drums, the winding of reeling cables should follow the stranding direction. Cables with a right stranding direction (Z-lay) should be operated to the right, and those with a left stranding direction (S-lay) to the left. If the stranding direction is unknown, please contact our technical support for assistance.
•  Unless otherwise specified in our catalog, the tensile stress on copper conductors should not exceed 15 N/mm² (as per DIN VDE 0298 Part 3). For applications requiring higher tensile stress, we recommend consulting our technical support to adjust the cable construction accordingly. The maximum permissible deviations in tensile stress are considered as the sum of both static and dynamic stress.
•  Reeling cables are generally not suitable for torsion stress. However, some degree of torsion during operation is unavoidable. If the torsion limit values exceed ± 25°/m, the service life of the cable may be significantly reduced.
•  Exceeding the minimum bending radius can also shorten the cable’s service life.
